The UNC/NCSU 2008 Season Debate: O'Brien vs. Davis

(Too Good to Leave in Links Section)

Media Day Article: LINK

NCSU: “We’re the best football program in the state, without question,” O'Brien said. “We are the state university and we expect to be here.”
UNC: Davis said, “...Before anybody anoints themselves, I’d say there probably needs to be some time invested into the programs, and then we’ll see what happens.”
----------------------
LJ: I really hope O'Brien dropped a "41-10" around Davis in Greensboro a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it would let Butch know he needs to hold his own in the state. I guess it would help inspire Butch more if NCSU could post a winning season...
----------------------
PT: Fact: O’Brien is 6-1 against the Division I schools in the state. Included in that is a 2-0 record against Butch and all his star recruits.

I loved reading all the quotes from Tar Heel players at last year’s ‘Muffler Bowl’ saying they felt like they should be playing in the Orange Bowl? Really???? You were 4-4 in the conference, and that was while playing in the weaker division.
----------------------
LJ: Fact: The Weaker Division Argument is bogus. Let's look at last year's shared opponents between UNC/NCSU: Rutgers, Miami, BC, Duke, & MD.

UNC walked away 4-1 against NCSU's 2-3, with both schools sharing an "L" to MD. Of those 2 NCSU wins, one is the automatic "W" you put on the board against Duke. So by your own argument: UNC 3-1 NCSU 1-3.

Teams NCSU did not play: VT, GT, UVA (Total 2008 Conf. Wins = 13)
Teams UNC did not play: Clemson, FSU, WFU (Total 2008 Conf. Wins = 13)

This just proves what a fluke 41-10 actually was...so keep on throwing me your "facts".
----------------------
PT: 3 Simple Facts:
1. O'Brien is 6-0 in 2 seasons against the weaker division unc hides in
2. The Pack's division was 11-7 in cross divisional games last season
3. 41-10
----------------------
LJ: 3 Simple Responses
1. You've played UVA, Duke, UNC, & Miami the past 2 seasons, a combined 20-28 in conference. Yet you've managed skirt by without playing VT or GT who combined for a 21-11 in conference in that same time span. It's great quoting "facts" without revealing the quality of the wins, but you've been called out.

2. You cannot chide the Coastal Division for UVA & Duke in one breath, and them claim them on your win total the next breath with pride. If you discount them for us, you must discount them for you.

3. Again - shared opponents on a head to head schedule. UNC was 4-2 and NCSU was 3-3 against the same competition. Advantage UNC. The 41-10 victory only puts one W in your win column, no matter how much you think it adds multiple.

  1. How do you call 41-10 a fluke? You lost by more than 4 touchdowns, and it could have been worse.

  2. Why couldn't State handle Rutgers, Miami, or BC? What is more indicative of the Pack's season? The 41-10 win over UNC:
    or the 10-41 L to USF;
    or the 9-27 loss to Clemson;
or the 0-34 L to South Carolina?

The margin of victory of UNC's other four losses combined totaled 9 points. So yes, the 41-10 loss to the Pack was a statistical anomaly when compared to the rest of the season.

The Tar Heels pulled a Delhomme and committed six turnovers and played their worst game of the year. No excuses.

How do the Tar Heels lose to Santa Clara in basketball in 2005 when they won the National Championship? How did the Pack beat the basketball Heels in '06-'07? Sometimes a team gets hot/cold - it's why you play the games.

  3. And...here is the combined record of NCSU's tough competition through the ACC: 31-33. Combined record of UNC's competition through the ACC? 31-33. Identical.

Differences? UNC played UVA and Duke, but UNC also played three 5 win conference teams: GT (W), BC (W), and VT (L). NCSU played two 5 win conference teams: FSU (L) and BC (L). UNC went 2-1 in those games. NCSU went 0-2.

  4. You are just like your snake oil salesman coach telling lies; we did beat Miami last year. Remember Tom is 6-0 against your division.

So if our competition had identical records, and we crushed you by 31 points, how can you say you were the better team? We were finally healthy by the time we played you. Hope your boys remember that senior day for a long time.

Remember the South Carolina game was 0-0 with 3 minutes left in the first half when Wilson went out. After that, your fellow high school alumni, Danny Evans, felt it was his obligation to make sure the Gamecocks caught every other pass he threw. Wilson also missed the South Florida game.

Are you really comparing a team that went 4-4 in the conference to a team that won the national championship? Remember, even though you make think it is true, the world does not revolve around unc athletics.

  5. State crushed no one last year. The Heels did it to themselves by making arguably the stupidest call of the 08-09 season by reinserting Yates as the starting QB against State on short practice, when Sexton had been easily running the show all season. As much as I like Davis, I lost a LOT of respect for him in making that move and dissing Cam like that. I remember being out working and ACTIVELY rooting for State because I was so pissed at Davis for that move. And sure enough, Yates was responsible for a large portion of those points. Not that Sexton's confidence wasn't destroyed when he entered later and added to it.

Yes, the Pack caught us at the worst possible time for us as a team last season.

Put it down. Write in large in paint on the sides of buildings.

UNC by two TD's over State this fall. And it won't be THAT close.

  6. The Heels doubled their win total from 4 to 8 wins. 16 wins aren't possible with the collegiate schedule - but if it were I wouldn't bet against the Heels.

It took the Pack 15 games with their best player ever, Rivers, to finally break the 10 win barrier in a season. The Packs one and only. Sad really...

Let me know when O'Brien turns in a winning season...

Yet again, the Heels are in the running for the Sears Cup...even thought the school year has yet to start.

  7. The Sears Cup is a joke so long as Stanford is the only school with competitive teams in Men's recreational couch lounging, Women's grass rolling, and the other assorted "sports" that only the West coast teams participate in, yet are allowed in this "competition." No other team can come close. We won how many nat'l championships this season and still didn't come close to Stanford.
