2009 Tar Heel Quick Hits

Lawrence Jordan:
  1. Butch Davis doubled the Tar Heel win total from his first year (4) to his second year (8), so the Tar Heel faithful expect the W total to grow.
  2. Davis hit the recruiting trail hard and is now in a position to start implementing the highly rated players into his coaching schemes.
  3. The Tar Heel return 9 starters from the 2008 team. Consistency is the key for this defensive unit, led by Marvin Austin and Quan Sturdivant, for the Heels to build on a relatively solid performance last year (LINK).
  4. The Tar Heels bring back a strong running attack with Shawn Draughn, Ryan Houston, and prized recruit Jamal Womble out of AZ. Draughn will be a threat to break the 1000 yard mark this season, and Houston (245 lbs) is a wrecking ball on the goal line.
  5. The young Tar Heel receivers bring talent but little experience to the offensive side of the ball. Greg Little and Dwight Jones are the listed starters with Joshua Adams and Johnny White backing them up.
  6. The key to the offense will be balance. If the Tar Heel receivers are not able to make plays, opposing defenses will stack against the run and it will be a long year for the Heels.
  7. Yates will need to stay healthy and consistent this year. Cameron Sexton transferred in the off season leaving the back up QBs as inexperienced Mike Paulus and Bryn Renner.
  8. Closing out games should be a focus in 2009, as 4 of UNC's 5 losses were by less than 3 points. UNC blew late leads in all four of those losses.
  9. It seems UNC says it every year, but youth is still a factor. With only 11 seniors on the roster this team will rely on its talented underclassmen to produce in the clutch...hopefully better than last year.

This season will be a success if... the Tar Heels can play BIG on the road in 2009. They play tough opponents in Blackburg (VT), Atlanta (GT), and Raleigh (NCSU). TJ Yates gains his early form from last year and the young receiving core proves themselves as legitimate threats. The defense lives up to its talented billing.
This season will be a downer if... the Tar Heels are unable to establish a passing game and become one dimensional. TJ Yates falls to a prolonged injury and a young QB is forced to take control of the offense. The Tar Heels are unable to finish games late with small margin leads.

Best Case (11-1)
Worst Case (7-5)
Prediction (10-2)

Do as they say, not as they do...

Lawrence Jordan: In the shameless world that is the recruitment trail, the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches is trying to encourage responsibility by asking coaches not to offer scholarships to recruits at too young an age. It's just too bad they all do not listen to their own suggestions...

June 19, 2008 - "The Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced that it strongly opposes 10th grade students and younger from making commitments to collegiate institutions for the purpose of playing men's basketball. Furthermore, the Board asks men's basketball coaches to refrain from offering or encouraging these young people to make such commitments." - LINK

  • Last summer the NABC Board of Directors asks coaches not to offer recruits scholarships until the summer after their sophomore year in high school.
  • Notable Members of the Board: Tom Izzo, Bill Self, Jim Boeheim, Phil Martelli, Mike Brey, Bo Ryan, Paul Hewitt
  • Rising Freshman J.P. Tokoto, a rising freshman in Wisconsin, has scholarship offers from: Duke, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Marquette, Minnesota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
  • That's right...Board Members Bill Self and Bo Ryan are ignoring their own suggestions.
  • And the "leader" that just happens to coach basketball in Durham is also on the list with notables Tubby Smith, Tom Crean, Bruce Pearl, etc.
  • For the record: "The North Carolina coaches made it clear they will not offer any player from the class of 2012 until June 15 of next summer, per the guidelines set up by the college coaches.” - LINK

So I have to ask, what good is the NABC when it's most influential members do not abide by its rules? But hey, I am sure it comes with a check and looks good on the resume, right?

NCSU Uniform "Update"

UPDATE: Pack Scraps New Uniform Design: LINK

LJ: So this is the new look of NCSU basketball? It must be rough being a NC State fan, because the uniforms are always horrible. Anyone else remember the Apex One uniform days? How about the infamous unitard days (circa Fire & Ice)? This doesn't rise those levels of tackiness, but this is a downgrade from the last year.

And while we are talking about school representations, I'd like to petition both UNC and NCSU to return to the traditional logos. The modern translation can't match the marching Wolf and Ram.

The kids these days just do not know how good we had it after a big win when we could don t-shirts sporting these images on the playgrounds with pride. Of course we had to walk uphill both ways at that time and this interweb thingy had not hit its stride yet, but we did have some things really good.

2009 NC State Wolfpack Quick Hits

Phillip Thompson (PT):
  1. Has there ever been a bigger culture change in a program than NC State from three years ago. The stupid penalties and overall lack of on field discipline have decreased significantly. You are very appreciated Tom O’Brien
  2. For the first time in years the Pack appears to have some depth at key positions. With the way the injuries have plagued State in the past, this would be a welcome change
  3. Jay Davis, Marcus Stone, Danny Evans, and Harrison Beck. These are the guys who have been under center since Philip Rivers left. They were good people, just not the type to make your team competitive in the ACC
  4. Thank the lord for Russell Wilson
  5. Look for a huge year from Owen Spencer if he can hang on to the ball this year
  6. George Bryan may run like he has a piano on his back, but he catches everything. I foresee him making one of the all-conference teams this season
  7. Nate Irving will be missed; however there is talent behind him
  8. The defensive line led by Willie Young and Alan-Michael Cash has the potential to be very good and may have to be due to inexperience in the back 7
  9. Best of luck to Toney Baker in his return from a two year knee injury
  10. One big key for the Pack is their staff continuity. Just ask Frank Beamer how important that is.

Season will be a success if . . . . Get off to a hot start for a change. If they are able to beat South Carolina in the opener and parlay that momentum into some early season wins. They need to enter the second half of the season on a roll as the schedule gets much tougher later in the year. . . . Russell Wilson needs to stay healthy, although it sounds like with Mike Glennon, the backup spot is the best it has been in years. . . . The young secondary and linebackers are able to step up and make plays

Season will be a downer if . . . . Wilson suffers a major injury and Glennon proves to not be ready yet . . . Youth on defense continues to give up big plays and can’t get off the field . . . The offense is not able to establish a running game making them very predictable.

Best Case 10-2

Worst Case 6-6

Coaches Connected to Kentucky Kinda Screwed

Lawrence Jordan:
Rick Pitino (former coach):
Elicit affair. Extortion plot. FBI involvement. Admittedly funding an abortion. Currently fighting with media. Cannot be good for current employer (U of L) - UK's arch in-state rival, with whom he took a job with in 2001.

Billie Gillispie (former coach): Run out of Lexington, KY after 40-25 record from 2007-2009. Arrested on third DUI charge this decade (1999 & 2003) early this morning at 2:30 am. And...he and UK sued each other.

John Calipari (current coach): First season at UK. Appeared in Final Four twice. NCAA forced him to "vacate" his appearance...twice...forfeiting all the wins in said seasons. Two programs have burned down due to NCAA violations that occurred on his watch, and he is the only coach to ever vacate two Final Four seasons. Enjoy the Calipari era UK!

UK - a bit of advice - quit hiring the slick used car salesman coaches! Of course, when your history involves playing an entire season ('52-'53) intersquad because the NCAA has banned any other schools from playing you, maybe cheating is part of the atmosphere in Lexington. Among the details leading to that suspension (gambling, point shaving, paying players, etc.).

PT: Eddie Sutton (former coach): How could you possibly leave this guy off the list? Remember he was coach in the mid-80’s when a package that was being delivered to star recruit Chris Mills burst open that was full of cash. After being forced out, he accepted at job at the ‘Memphis of the West’, Oklahoma State. While there he ran what appeared to be a shady program (remember he allowed JamesOn Curry to enroll). Then was forced to resign due to problems with alcohol.

LJ: Clearly an oversight when briefly reviewing their history, but a great catch, PT. Just adds more fuel to the corrupt UK fire!

1. Would Bolt be a good NFL receiver?
40 Yard Speculation:
LINK: 4.22
LINK: Sub 4.0?
LJ: Breaking down Bolt's WR is intriguing (LINK), and these articles take it a step farther. I know Bolt is fast...but can he take a hit?
PT: He is obviously very fast, but how many times do you run in a straight line in the NFL? Could he get off the line of scrimmage?

2. Isiah Thomas Sucks: Threatening to Bail on Cancer
Deadspin Post: LINK
LJ: As Deadspin properly points out:
a. FIU is under contract.
b. Isiah Thomas is publicly threatening to pull out of a cancer benfit because he does not like the match-up.
Really? After ruining his executive professional basketball career the only job he could land was at FIU. FIU! And his first headline is crying about his opponent being to good? Jordan was on point about denying Isiah the right to play on the original Dream Team.
PT: Lets see, so far Isiah has:
A. Almost run the Toronto Raptors out of business
B. Made the CBA go bankrupt
C. Managed a team with unlimited resources, in a city where everyone wants to play, and still could never win thirty games

Over/Under – 2.5 years till FIU is on some sort of probation?

3. Speaking of which...UNC Basketball Schedule Released
Inside Carolina: LINK
LJ: Ohio State, Syracuse/Cal, Kentucky, Michigan State, Texas: Out of conference schedule is strong. UNC finally plays WFU twice in an ACC season (payback time), but only gets Maryland once. I'm excited about the ACC Tournament returning home to Greensboro.
PT: I really do not want to think of basketball right now. Remember, we were ranked 119 last week. Unless Russell Wilson is playing the point, I could care less at this moment.

4. Beasley's Problems Run Deep
Miami Hearld: LINK
LJ: This is much worse than anyone orginally thought, and I wish him the best. But, the working man in me questions someone that flips out because they actually have to put forth "effort" for a career. 30 games to 82 games? No. Millions of dollars? Heaven forbid. Actually practicing to improve? Nay, I say. Let's hope he gets some perspective in rehab.
PT: Why do I have a feeling that this situation could end up like Eddie Griffin.

ECU Pirating UNC Recruit?

(LINK)

LJ: Rumors are flying about highly ranked Fayetteville recruit Justin Dixon as football season quickly approaches, but one certainty is that Dixon will not be attending the University of North Carolina (UNC) this fall.

After committing to UNC approximately one year ago, Dixon failed to meet minimum academic requirements outlined in Proposition 48 (Prop 48) by the NCAA, and he will not be enrolled at UNC.

The NCAA passed Prop 48 in 1983 to require athletes to take their high school education seriously if they wanted to play Division I athletics (LINK). Prop 48 requires a minimum SAT score of 700, or an ACT score of 17, and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in at least 11 courses in core classes.

Non-qualifiers of Prop 48, as is Dixon, are not allowed to receive athletic scholarships and must sit out one athletic year while losing that year of eligibility. Not an easy road to take for a star athlete, and most BCS conferences, from the ACC to the SEC, will not accept non-qualifiers.

The NCAA allows the athlete to participate in athletic activities for 14 days while they review their transcript. If Dixon remains unqualified, pays his own way, and does not participate in practice there should be no questioning the athlete's move. BUT...if Dixon is somehow miraculously qualified in these two weeks and failing to do so for over a year - there should be some investigation into this process.

ECU has been campaigning (literally) with NC State lawmakers to require in-state schools to play them in athletic competition. This insures ECU greater media coverage and national recognition, which drives up applications and enrollment at ECU and positively promotes more impassioned rivalries within the state of NC.

It does bring the integrity of these campaigned games into question, when ECU is taking advantage of "grey area" recruiting loopholes for non-qualifiers that large BCS conferences are not allowed to employ.

Skip Holtz has done a great job at ECU recruiting, coaching, and promoting its program, but will ECU be able to compete in big conference competition without these recruiting loopholes? Will Dixon miraculously see playing time at ECU this year? Time will answer these questions and Dixon's situation, as a prime example, will be something to watch.

Weekend Review

1. Panthers Lose Again: LINK
LJ: But...it's preseason football. Steve Smith? Out. Jonathan Stewart? Out. Jon Beason? Out. DeAngelo Williams? Stud. Jake Delhomme barely gets it done with a full arsenal of offensive weapons, so to expect him to perform better with less is unrealistic. Still shaking my head at his latest contract - but obvious question remains - who would be realistic and better?
PT: Jake barely gets in done? He only played two series and both series were without his top 2 wideouts (Smith/Muhammad). One of those drives, the Panthers scored a TD by Delhomme making good throws. If you are looking for Jake to put up great stats, keep waiting because that is not what is required of him. As long as they are healthy, everything should be fine come September 13th.

2. Walk-Off unassisted triple-play! LINK
LJ: Always cool when this happens - and a HUGE bailout for the pitcher. I pulled off a an unassisted play myself in coach pitch, but aren't professionals supposed to be able to avoid this? I attended a game at Fenway in the late '80s where Tom Brunansky hit into two of these in the same game. Those are my triple play fun facts...
PT: At least you did not start a story with "one time in band camp..."

3. Red Sox continue free fall! LINK
LJ: After starting off the year 8-0 against the Evil Empire, the Red Sox have dropped 6 of the last 7 games to drop to 7.5 games back. Not exactly playing their best during a crucial part of the season, and defeating Beckett is insult on top of injury.
PT: Not looking good for the Sox. When the pitching was good, the offense stunk. Now it the other way around. I predict the Sox will be home in October

4. Smoltz with the W! LINK
LJ: The addition of Smoltz could bolster an already tremendous staff. Credit to the Cards for their willingness to give the veteran and future HOF'er another Big League shot.
PT: What a comeback. 9k’s in five innings, including seven straight. Proved how tough it is to pitch in Boston. Cardinals have the biggest lead in baseball. Thanks Cubs

5. Beasley, baggy, busted, Battlestar Galactica... LINK
LJ: Not being a real big tat' guy, I'll leave that commentary to the more informed, but will somebody please tell public figures to examine their pictures before broadcasting themselves in precarious situations to the World Wide Web?
PT: He has nothing in the Birdman. (LINK)

Panthers Wish List Against Dolphins

PT:
1. Some form of life from 1st string offense. Dwayne Jarrett please do something. You keep this up and your jersey will be on the $9.99 sales rack at Dicks come Christmas time.

2. Someone to keep blockers off Beason. Anybody know a 350 lb fat guy who can play defensive tackle, then please call John Fox?

3. Pray for no injuries.

4. At least one great Panther cheerleader story from South Beach.

5. For fans to realize this is the PRESEASON. No Steve Smith, Thomas Davis, and many other starters means this is not the same team you will see Sept 13th.

The UNC/NCSU 2008 Season Debate: O'Brien vs. Davis

(Too Good to Leave in Links Section)

Media Day Article: LINK

NCSU: “We’re the best football program in the state, without question,” O'Brien said. “We are the state university and we expect to be here.”
UNC: Davis said, “...Before anybody anoints themselves, I’d say there probably needs to be some time invested into the programs, and then we’ll see what happens.”
----------------------
LJ: I really hope O'Brien dropped a "41-10" around Davis in Greensboro a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it would let Butch know he needs to hold his own in the state. I guess it would help inspire Butch more if NCSU could post a winning season...
----------------------
PT: Fact: O’Brien is 6-1 against the Division I schools in the state. Included in that is a 2-0 record against Butch and all his star recruits.

I loved reading all the quotes from Tar Heel players at last year’s ‘Muffler Bowl’ saying they felt like they should be playing in the Orange Bowl? Really???? You were 4-4 in the conference, and that was while playing in the weaker division.
----------------------
LJ: Fact: The Weaker Division Argument is bogus. Let's look at last year's shared opponents between UNC/NCSU: Rutgers, Miami, BC, Duke, & MD.

UNC walked away 4-1 against NCSU's 2-3, with both schools sharing an "L" to MD. Of those 2 NCSU wins, one is the automatic "W" you put on the board against Duke. So by your own argument: UNC 3-1 NCSU 1-3.

Teams NCSU did not play: VT, GT, UVA (Total 2008 Conf. Wins = 13)
Teams UNC did not play: Clemson, FSU, WFU (Total 2008 Conf. Wins = 13)

This just proves what a fluke 41-10 actually was...so keep on throwing me your "facts".
----------------------
PT: 3 Simple Facts:
1. O'Brien is 6-0 in 2 seasons against the weaker division unc hides in
2. The Pack's division was 11-7 in cross divisional games last season
3. 41-10
----------------------
LJ: 3 Simple Responses
1. You've played UVA, Duke, UNC, & Miami the past 2 seasons, a combined 20-28 in conference. Yet you've managed skirt by without playing VT or GT who combined for a 21-11 in conference in that same time span. It's great quoting "facts" without revealing the quality of the wins, but you've been called out.

2. You cannot chide the Coastal Division for UVA & Duke in one breath, and them claim them on your win total the next breath with pride. If you discount them for us, you must discount them for you.

3. Again - shared opponents on a head to head schedule. UNC was 4-2 and NCSU was 3-3 against the same competition. Advantage UNC. The 41-10 victory only puts one W in your win column, no matter how much you think it adds multiple.

Moving discussion to comments section - please join in!

Friday Morning Links

1. O'Brien vs. Davis: LINK
NCSU: “We’re the best football program in the state, without question,” O'Brien said. “We are the state university and we expect to be here.”
UNC: Davis said, “...Before anybody anoints themselves, I’d say there probably needs to be some time invested into the programs, and then we’ll see what happens.”

You were 4-4 in the conference, and that was while playing in the weaker division.

2. ACC/SEC Comparison (with a twist): LINK
LJ: "Southeastern Conference diehard football fans have claimed for years that the SEC is a superior conference...However, NFL general managers, coaches and scouts might beg to differ." Steve Dorsey makes some great points by looking at the talent farmed into the NFL by both conferences, but why can't the ACC coaches win big with said talent? I guess it's spread around the league evenly with every team then (exception Duke & UVA)? This year will show what direction the programs are going.
PT: It is rather simple. To be a great team in college, you need solid play at the quarterback position. There has been a void in the ACC over the last few seasons, while at the same time the SEC has had guys like Tim Tebow, Jamarcus Russell, and Matthew Stafford. The universal poor quarterbacking in the ACC has leveled the field to where everyone has a chance.

3. Insure Your Fantasy Team (you read that right): LINK
LJ: Fantasy Sports are spectacular but they carry a certain stigma about them. Imagine the guy that buys a gal a drink and opens with:
Fantasy Insurer: "I'm in the insurance business."
Bar Gal: "Really (hair toss)...what kind (blink, blink)."
FI: "Fantasy Sports Insurance."
BG: "(Turns shoulder) I am really giving you your drink back."
PT: This gives the insurance business a bad name. Ridiculous.

4. Ocho Cinco: A Man of Many Talents

LJ: Is Ocho Cinco a prima donna? Yes. Is he entertaining? Yes. If you are on Twitter he is worth a follow: http://twitter.com/OGOchoCinco. He was up until 4 a.m. last night talking about his kick, among other things.
PT: It was a great kick. If John Kasay had done this in the Super Bowl a few years ago, the Panthers should have a ring. I cannot wait to see Hard Knocks next week to see the reasoning behind him kicking.

5. What is that growing on your face: LINK
LJ: Maybe I'm just jealous since I cannot even grow a full mustache...
PT: The winner has to be the one of Drew Gooden. How does it get like that? And it is wet!!

Usain Bolt Runs 200m in 19.19

Math:
Time: 19.19 sec
Distance: 200 m
Ft/sec: 34.2/sec
MPH: 23.315

LJ: Will we be able to recognize Usain Bolt's accomplishments right now? This story is so much more deserving of our attention than NFL jail sentences, old QB's unretiring (again), Memphis/Calipari cheating...This story is actually great news! Noone has dominated track and field to this degree in recent memory! I am going to relish the moment before the steriods questions inevitably start to surface. I am crossing my fingers and wishing for the best here. Truly remarkable performances by Usain Bolt.

Thursday Lunch Links

1. Plaxico Burress Sentenced to 2 Years: LINK
LJ: The US legal system baffles me. Plaxico Buress gets 2 years for possession of an unregistered fire arm and shooting himself in public. Michael Vick gets 2 years for financially backing an illegal dog fighting ring. AND...Donte Stallworth spends less than 30 days in jail for drunkenly running someone over. Do not get me wrong; all of these men are moral idiots. But how do these sentences relate to the crimes at hand.
PT:Plax’s biggest problem was his thinking he was above the law. If I remember correctly, he was offered a plea deal that would have allowed him to serve less time. But because he thought he was above the law he now has a two year sentence. Not too many GM's look for a 34 year old wide receiver who has not played in two seasons. 'Been nice knowing you Plax.

2. Memphis Pending NCAA Sanctions: LINK
LJ: Memphis will be forced to forfeit many of the wins Calipari compiled over the past few years. It amazes me how coaches can skip town without any consequence when the punishment lands on their former programs. (See Kelvin Sampson.) But...it's not like UK is above reproach when it comes to cheating. It should be any interesting next few years with Calipari at the helm in Lexington, KY.
PT:Shocker of all shockers. Calipari was cheating at Memphis. Even though my program is down in the dumps and made a run at this guy 4 years ago, we might be lucky not to have gotten him. Both of his Final Four teams do not exist. It is only a matter of time before Kentucky has the same fate. But for some reason, all his ‘scholar athletes’ want to follow this guy like he is the Pide Piper.

3. ESPN Focuses on ACC Football:
a. Will the ACC make the BCS leap? LINK
b. Third-year coaches expecting more: LINK
c. Five things to watch in the ACC: LINK

LJ: These are basic breakdowns with nothing too ground-breaking. Basically, after the ridiculous amount of parity in the final standing last year, everyone is waiting to see who can separate themselves. I'm not sure how Dinich fails to mention UNC when breaking down the lack of experienced receivers in the ACC...
PT:It is an absolute crap shoot as to who is the program to rise up. Honestly, everyone but Duke and UVA could have a shot this year. How fitting is it that they both are in the same weaker division. That should be 2 gimmies for VA Tech, Miami, GA Tech, and UNC, but we all remember UNC has not won in Charlottesville since Jimmy Carter was screwing up the economy.

Wednesday Afternoon Links

1. CollegeHoops.net Releases Preseason Basketball Rankings: Pack #119? LINK
LJ: Pack is #119 in the early goings. Legitimate concerns expressed about lack of inside threats now that Lorenzo Brown did not qualify. I'm still hoping for a return of a Fire & Ice, Gugs, or Todd Fuller situation over in Raleigh. The Tar Heels will still dominate, but the Pack would at least be a bigger thorn in Duke's side.
PT: According to this poll, we are behind the basketball powers of Sam Houston St., Troy, and Oakland. UNREAL. Losing Lo Brown really hurts, but I would hope we are not this bad.

2. Current Debate: Tim Tebow Greatest Ever? Bowden: Nope. LINK
LJ: Bowden started a conversation that is gaining momentum. Twitter has the columnists buzzing about Tommie Frazier, Charlie Ward, Michael Vick, Vince Young...to name a few. I mean, Spurrier didn't even vote Tebow first team All SEC. I thought Chris Keldorf in '97-'98 was pretty special...
PT: Two words: Philip Rivers. Speaking of Keldorf, how is it possible that a QB from unc has never thrown a touchdown in the NFL? I guess the Luke Huard’s of the world do not always pan out.

3. SEC Bans Social Media: LINK
LJ: Speaking of the SEC, how do they expect to enforce this? When I lived in Atlanta, SEC fans proudly told me, "If you want an education go to the ACC, if you want to play football come to the SEC." Obviously...case in point.
PT: What are the odds Lane Kiffin breaks all these rules in week 1? Anyway, who cares, we focus on the ACC.

4. Morning radio waves asked the question if the Panthers were better with Delhomme or the QB who shall not be named in MN?
LJ: After quickly changing the station (SEE POST) I decided that was a lose, lose, lose situation (cite: Michael Scott). Each team loses and I lose for thinking about it.
PT: They both are not afraid to turn the ball over. However, at least Jake’s teammates all seem to like him.

5. Is a Horse-Power Joke Inappropriate? LINK
LJ: You would think they would try to take precautions with such big animals roaming the potential course - but it is South America. I often question things that happen in South Carolina, as well, but the end result is generally a shoulder shrug.
PT: That was disturbing. The way the car kept going made me think it was a tank.

Paulus QB at Syracuse?

Greg Paulus was named the Syracuse starting QB today: LINK

Rumor has it that Syracuse will be running the Wing-T offense this year under the guidance of Greg Paulus. Danny Green, who is expected to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers soon, could not be reached for comment.

The QB Formerly Known as Brett Favre

“At the bottom of enmity between strangers lies indifference.” Soren Kierkegaard

LJ: I innocently read about the QB formerly known as Brett Favre flying to Minnesota while checking The ONH Twitter account. I am now completely over this story. I am taking a resolute stand on the QB formerly known as Brett Favre...and that stand is indifference.

I am beyond the point of hatred of this story because I no longer care. I will not read one article about him this year online or otherwise. I will change any channel where his image or name appears. His story is now my Fredo Corleone. His visage is being dumped unceremoniously over the side of my boat.

This old prima donna has now overshadowed all that was once good with his character and his career. The loyal, small market, huge arm hero who successfully defeated the bully, big market teams is gone. The NFL’s David who defeated the Goliaths is now a completely corrupt shell of his former self, operating purely on ego and vanity.

I’ve lost count of how many NFL franchises he’s held hostage over the past five years and I’m not bothering to look it up. Many fans will boo this man as he trots out onto the field to raise his ever increasing record of INTs, but I am taking it a step farther. I am not attending, tuning in, channeling, or reading anything put forth by the media about this man. I will not add to the ratings that cover this clown.

Acknowledging this man with boos gives him too much credit. After all, sports are entertainment. With no attendance, no ratings, no clicks...there will be no coverage. Enjoy this NFL season and support your favorite teams, but omit this one overly seasoned mercenary. You will feel better that you did.

I am flipping the “Field of Dreams” script where it is famously noted, “If you build it…he will come.” My new Favre mantra sounds like this, “If you ignore him, he will eventually fade away.”

PT:I, too, am very tired of this story. I really wish Farve would have ridden out into the sunset a few years ago, but he chose not to do so. That is fine with me because it is his choice.

My problem is not with Brett coming back as much as the constant coverage this story. With all the shenanigans last summer, did have any effect on the power in the NFL? NOPE, the Jets were nowhere to be seen in January. Does this make the Vikings the team to beat in the NFC? No chance.

As fans, we are force fed stories about his return like we really care. I do think Farve could have handled it in a better way, but he is not the one talking about it everyday on ESPN.

I feel that Farve was a great player, but the over-saturation by the media has almost made him unwatchable.

Weekend Quick View (8/14 - 8/16)

1. Usain Bolt:
LJ: 9.58 seconds. Really? 100 m = 328.1 ft. Bolt flashed down the track at 34.25 ft/s or 23.35 mph (yes, I enjoyed doing that math). The showdown with Tyson Gay materialized but proved to be no contest. Gay does deserve recognition for his 9.71 seconds, an American record.
PT: Nice math, nerd. Do you really think this guy is clean? Ben Johnson Jr. was fast, though.

2. YE Yang defeats Tiger in Sunday showdown:
LJ: YE Yang win or Tiger loss? Tiger didn't play his best golf Sat/Sun, but give Yang credit for turning the pressure onto Tiger. His eagle on 14 flipped the script on Tiger, known for his pressure applying shots, and made him have to play catch-up. An overall intriguing PGA Championship that should be remembered for a competitive finale and not as a "choke."
PT: Tiger is great, but call it what it was. A CHOKE. He shot a 75 on Sunday with a 2 stroke lead to start the day. Yang was great though.

3. Red Sox Plummeting:
LJ: The Red Sox dropped 2 of 3 in a crucial match-up with the Rangers this weekend, losing their Wild Card lead. Ian Kinsler killed the Sox and joined the 25/20 club as a 2B, a rare feat. TheONH favorite Josh Hamilton batted .333 for the weekend raising his average to .264, so there was some solace derived from and utterly dreadful display.
PT: Amazing that after the news of steroids in the Red Sox clubhouse came out, that they can not hit a thing. Their pitching may be great but it doesn’t matter if you can’t hit. BTW, Cardinals are now up 5 games on Cubs.

4. David Wright Plunked:
LJ: Wright took a 93 mph fastball of the noggin this weekend placing him on the 15-day DL. LJ's rotisserie fantasy baseball team will miss Wright in the upcoming weeks. Not coincedently LJ's team forfeited its commanding hold on first place...an all around let down of a baseball weekend.
PT: Beyond scary. Baseball is very lucky no one has died on the field in a long time. Hit batsmen and hard comebackers to the pitcher are very dangerous

5. UNC Football Notes:
LJ: Donovan Tate left football camp late last week and is expected to sign with Padres - a very good move for the #3 overall MLB draft pick. Carl Gaskins (OL) out for season with an ACL tear. Ryan Taylor (H-Back) out with MCL sprain for at least a month. Tar Heels landed two new commitments for the 2010 class last week.
PT: Was Tate ever going to UNC? Nope. Just another may to boost those recruiting rankings. The man has to run out of snake oil you would think someday.

Old Saint Vick - Welcome to Philly

PT: Thank the Lord! Two positive things just happened. My beloved Carolina Panthers stayed away from Mr. Dog Whisper himself Mike Vick. And to make it better, he landed with the hated Eagles.

So the Eagles bench McNabb last year then show faith in him by extending his contract this off season. Now in the city that boo’d Santa Clause, he has to look over his shoulder every time he makes the wrong read.

To me this is a HORRIBLE match. But look on the bright side, Vick fills the thug void that Philadelphia has had since Iverson was traded 2 years ago.

LJ: The City of Brotherly Love? I'll believe it when I see it. McNabb is toeing the company line publicly expressing his endorsement of the acquisition. Rumors are floating that behind closed doors he expresses displeasure with looking over his shoulder.

I love the fact that Vick ends up with the only NFL franchise with in-stadium jail.

I cannot wait to see You Tube clips of Philadelphians in McNabb and Vick jerseys trading blows.

Late Season Baseball Lines

American League
NY Yankees (3:1)
PT: Do you really have faith in A-Rod when it matters? Plus this is usually the time of year CC realizes he is 300 lbs.
LJ: Rumor has it A-Roid's lady pushing for a little Rod, as if A-Roid's wasn't shriveled enough. I merrily predict this to end badly. Enjoy it NY tabloids.

Boston Red Sox (6:1)
PT: Beckett is great. Big Papi needs some of his magical juice.
LJ: Beckett is great. Needs some help.

LA Angles (7:1)
PT: How can a team with Tori Hunter and Vlad be this boring?
LJ: Vlad finally healthy: hitting over .360 over past 13 games (even with a month off in between.)

Detroit Tigers (10:1)
PT: Great pitching. Would have to get hot to win two series.
LJ: Strong at home, weak away.

Chicago White Sox (10:1)
PT: Love the new additions
LJ: Peavy making Minor League starts, will boost rotation soon.

Tampa Bay (15:1)
PT: Too far out and that makes the rest of the teams happy. If they get in the playoffs, watch out.
LJ: Lost 4 in a row as of today, 10.5 back. Reaching a "put up or shut up" point in the season.

Texas Rangers (20:1)
PT: Kevin Millwood is your ace. Think about that. Who pitches Game 2, Kent Merker?
LJ: Rangers have been big offense, small pitching for years. How'd they miss Pedro?

National League:
Philadelphia Phillies (3:1)
PT: Hamels and Lee will be tough. Bad city karma with Vick?
LJ: Loved seeing Pedro back pitching. Team to beat in NL.

LA Dodgers (5:1)
PT: Will Torre in usual fashion have his pen exhausted by October?
LJ: Consistent with sizable 5 game lead in division. Manny will always be Manny.

St. Louis Cardinals (5:1)
PT: I doubt the ‘Baseball Gods’ would give me 2 rings in 4 years.
LJ: I doubt PT factors into the equation, but Pujols best player in baseball.

San Francisco Giants (10:1)
PT: Would you want to face the in a short series?
LJ: No offense. Least runs scored in ML outside SD.

Colorado Rockies (20:1)
PT: WHO?????
LJ: Can gain ground in division with Nationals and Padres series over next 5 games.

Atlanta Braves (50:1)
PT: Next.
LJ: Went to ATL earlier this season for Red Sox match-up. Weak hitting ATL doesn't have it this year...

Chicago Cubs (1,000,000:1)
PT: What will their excuse be this time? ‘Next year is ours’!
LJ: Red Sox and White Sox have ended their suffering...when is the Cubbies' time? (Not this year.)

Weekend Preview

1. Q: Will Tiger Woods get his 1st major of the year and win the PGA?
PT: He is off to a great start, but give me the field over him.
LJ: I'll take Tiger over all the field has to offer.  The Majors are his focus.

2. Q: Will Dale Jr. finally win a race?
PT: One Word: NO.
LJ: Blasphemy in NC: I could care less...

3. Q: Will the Cardinals continue to extend their lead over the fading Cubs?
PT: Absolutely, with the Padres in town starting Friday night.
LJ: Depends if the Cubbie fans are still dumping beers from atop the ivey: LINK.

4. Q: What is the max period of time we are capable of watching preseason NFL games?
PT: 10 minutes
LJ: 1 minute or less. Non-score keeping t-ball games are more competitive.

5. Q: Will PT break 50 over 9 holes on the links this weekend?
PT: Sadly, no.
LJ: I think this actress (LINK) is more prepared for tennis than PT in a polo holding a driver...

Vegas/Pollsters Favor Heels over Pack

LJ: So who is the better team heading into the 2010 season between the Tar Heels and the Wolfpack? You're going to get drastically different opinions around here, so let's look to the unbiased for preseason predictions.

Coaches Poll: LINK
UNC #20
NCSU (not ranked)

Vegas:
UNC: LINK: 80-to-1 Winning BCS: 5-1 to win ACC Champ.: 3-1 to win Coastal Division
NCSU: LINK: 100-to-1 Winning BCS: (odds not given for winning ACC Champ or Atlantic Div.)

This phenomenon was covered last Saturday in the Raleigh N&O: LINK. I guess people looked at the entire season instead of one game...and preemptively (cough, 41-10, cough).

Team breakdowns and reseason forecasts by Philip Thompson (PT) and Lawrence Jordan (LJ) should be ready by early next week.

"Hard Knocks" - Quick Thoughts

PT: Quick thoughts on my viewing of "Hard Knocks" last night.

1. The Bengals look bad, real bad.

2. They look like the cheapest organization in sports this side of the Charlotte Bobcats.

3. Wasn’t Roy Williams washed-up last year in Dallas.

4. Tank Johnson was giving a child insight on life. Check out his rap sheet here: LINK

5. Carson Palmer is wasting away his career was this group of losers.

LJ: Did I hear that someone hired a plane to drag a banner over their practice? LINK. That's not good. Just ask Reggie Miller: LINK. New hot business: Banner Message Flying.

VT's Evans Injury = Wide Open Coastal Division

LJ: VT suffered a crucial loss today when RB Darren Evans went down with an ACL injury (LINK). I will never cheer for a athlete to sustain an injury, but this unfortunate incident does bring the Hokies back to the pack in the ACC Coastal division.

Can the Tar Heels stymie the Hokies and Yellow Jackets run at the division championship? The ball is up for grabs should they find some receivers to make the catch (LINK)...

Youkilis No Robin Ventura

LJ: I am a big fan of Kevin Youkilis. I like the way he plays the game. I usually like the way he represents Boston (even his cameo on Man v Food: LINK)...but this is inexcusable:

I cannot help but reminisce about the Nolan Ryan vs. Robin Ventura bout circa 1993 (LINK: I cannot believe that was 16 years ago). Questionable mound charging tactics by both batters, and it begs the questions: "Would you rather get your ass handed to you by someone twice your age or half your age?"

Now, if I had my "druthers", I would not have my backside handed to me by anyone. I am a fan of winking at the pitcher after he hits you (I set an unofficial record in HBPs at my high school). But, if I had to eat crow, I'd still rather be Youkilis.

Yes, Youkilis throwing his helmet was very unmanly (LINK) and having his weak tackle attempt turned on him by a 150 lbs. pitcher is quite embarrassing, but it still does not match the headlock and multi-face-punch Ventura was handed by HOFer Ryan.

End of the day: Red Sox win, 2 game win streak after Yankee series unpantsing, 1.5 game lead in wild card race, 5.5 games behind the dreaded Yankees (insert Bill Simmons self inflicting wound reference here).

Panther Preseason Woes

Injuries of Note: Steve Smith (shoulder), Jonathan Stewart (heel), Maake Kemoeatu (Achilles)

Radio Buzz: Ranges from:
"we were 2-0 without him - see him after the buy week"
"Gamble getting back for Ken Lucas"
"He's faking to get people to underestimate the Panthers"
"Jake better when not trying to force ball to Smith."

Message Board Rattle: Ranges from:
"gives other receivers reps with Delhomme - blessing in disguise"
"Smith receiving and blocking will be missed"
"Gives other larger receivers a chance to block for running game"
"2-3 weeks tops"

LJ: Smith makes the entire team better, especially his quarterback. Delhomme would not be in the position he is today with the Pro Bowl WR. He opens the running game up by drawing double teams as a deep threat, a must for the historically conservative John Fox gameplan. The Panthers need a healthy Smith for the entire season. He has missed parts of the past several seasons due to suspension or injury.

Stewart is sitting out the afternoon practices to give his heel time to rest, a result of favoring his toe on a previous foot injury.

Kemoeatu's early loss weakens the defense but gives the Panthers time to adjust personnel.

Quick Note: Jerry Richardson made an inspirational appearance yesterday after his heart transplant. It's good to see he is up and about. Word has it he called Peppers up front to stand with him. Let's hope this works a little better than the last time Richardson called out Peppers, resulting in a 2.5 sack season from the enigmatic if athletic defensive star.

Weekend Quick View

1. Tiger Woods @ Bridgestone
LJ: 70th win, 7th at Bridgestone, 10 under Sat/Sun, can’t say it was unexpected, greatness abounds...LINK
PT: Nice choke on 16 Padraig

2. Yankees Sweep 4 From Red Sox
LJ: Ortiz/Manny revelations, weekend sweep by the evil empire, feel like the Ewoks sans help from the rebel forces, or Padraig on the clock (too soon?). LINK
PT: Real story is Cardinals starting to pull away from Cubs

3. Josh Hamilton Relapse
LJ: Sad to see this happen. Drug/Alcohol abuse a hard thing to kick. How did pictures from Jan. take this long to surface? LINK (UPDATE: Katie Hamilton speaks: LINK)
PT: Sad, very sad. Everyday day there is a chance this could happen again. Doesn’t he have someone follow him around to keep this from happening?

4. CFB Teams Posing Shirtless? UT: Link A GT: Link B
LJ: Shaking head. Worst trend ever? When did Chuck "The Chest" Amato take over SEC/ACC team photos? I pray this lunacy doesn’t creep inside the NC borders…
PT: I think the worst trend is UNC’s prized recruit breaking a teammate’s jaw during a fight in his first week of practice.

UPDATE: Apparently, TheONH aren't the only one's that noticed this trend. Check out these additional schools joining the questionable team picture scene. LINK

Introduction

The Old North Hate is dedicated to discussing the sports world at-large from opposing fan-base perspectives; beginning with UNC and NCSU. There are very few places on Earth with such tightly intertwined fan bases, and we're here to spread our arms out and invade our neighbors' fan-spaces.

The ACC, NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL are all fair game. Amid the vitriol we hope to make a few valid points, challenge some conceptions, and step on more than a few toes.

What are rivalries without a shared medium to express opposing views? We encourage reader participation via the comments section to join in the fray.
